Bloom into You - Masks and Love

Bloom into you, aka Yagate Kimi Ni Naru is about a girl falling in love with another girl, and how their friendship blossoms. Our protagonist is "Yuu" and she has never fallen in love, and wishes to. To her, it's something that she can't achieve and this is her internal conflict. "Nanami", a well respected senior falls in love with Yuu, but Yuu doesn't love Nanami. She is afraid to love, and still struggles with affection.

Nanami continues to love Yuu and both of the character's thought process are conveyed through the use of narration which really helps us get in their heads and see things from their perspective which makes us empathize with them. Nanami really loves and acknowledges even the smallest of gestures that Yuu does, or her features such as beauty and kindness. Meanwhile Yuu wishes she would feel the same way towards Nanami, but can't, which bothers her.

Even the characters are extremely well fleshed out. They are the way they show themselves in public, but they have internal flaws and insecurities that really make them feel three dimensional. Nanami is shown to be a great leader, confident, pretty, kind, empathetic and pretty much is perfect. But over the course of the show, her layers peel off and we see that deep inside she maintains this image as this is how her late sister was to Nanami. She is insecure and afraid, but opens up to only Yuu regarding this which lets us know that she trusts Yuu.

Love is based off of trust.

Yuu certainly empathizes with Nanami and they become close friends, although still having moments of intimacy and affection. Nanami wishes to keep loving Yuu despite not having been reciprocated those feelings. She hates herself, and wishes to be like her "perfect" sister. In the final episodes, on asking other seniors about how her sister was, turns out she wasn't as perfect as she thought. She did some questionable things and she possibly put up an act of being perfect to be a role model to her little sister Nanami.

This troubles Nanami as people tell her that she's a better leader than her sister which makes her uncomfortable. This makes us realize that everyone is flawed in some way and that no one is perfect. But this series celebrates imperfections and flaws of these characters.

I even love all the side characters. They all have their own quirks and feelings that make them disctinct and likeable.

Nanami really is in love with Yuu and it's mostly because she learns not only about Yuu, but about herself in the process. She doesn't want these moments to end, and that just adds to the beauty of their time together. The series is slow paced, but nothing grand happens. It's mostly just about these two girls and their feelings for one another.

My favourite scenes are the quiet and tender scenes between these characters. These delicate moments of character and affection is what really made me fall in love with this show. It concludes beautifully too as these people become more fully realized and learn to care about each other.

This show is one of the most beautiful love stories I've ever seen.
