Why Guardians of the Galaxy is Great!

I felt like revisiting the guardians of the galaxy movies after hearing a couple soundtracks from the film. All I can say is that I loved it. To me, this is the 2nd best Marvel Cinematic Universe film. But that doesn't matter. It stands as it's own story.

In the beginning, we see a young Peter Quill who's listening to music in order to supress the reality that his mother is dying in front of him. She asks her son to hold her hand as a final form of goodbye, but he's young and immature. He doesn't hold her hand and acknowledges her once it's too late.

We then cut to an ominous figure with a scary mask walking through a mysterious planet with these large rock formations and constant presence of smoke. I got to say, the design of Morag is brilliant. It has character. But then turns out, this ominous figure is indeed that little child we saw in the beginning as he wears his headphones and switches on his Walkman listening to "Come and get your Love" and starts singing and dancing around. This establishes his immature nature even after 26 years as he still hasn't moved on from his mother's passing.

It's great seeing all the characters meeting each other and slowly learning about each other and coming across situations that force them to work together, that shows to us their skillsets, powers, personalities and past about these people. Gamora is an abused daughter who learns to make friends, Peter Quill learns to mature and have people to care about, Drax learns to not be driven by rage, Rocket learns to be open to people, and Groot was always heartfelt. This team works because it's about flawed losers (as Quill terms them) learning to form bonds and accept each other despite their flaws.

This also happens to be one of the most beautiful looking MCU films as the lighting and set design goes crazy and a lot of the planets and locations have this dirty and grungy feel to them that makes it look like there's a history behind it.

The main reason this film works is because of the visionary behind it known as James Gunn. This doesn't feel like a typical "MCU" film. He manages to balance setting up future films, Easter eggs, and references to the comics and other films brilliantly as he still manages to maintain the focus on the characters and their arcs. He knows that the villain of the film, "Ronan" is extremely bland and Cartoonishly evil, so he gives him minimum Screen time. Even some of the action sequences are kind of forgettable, which is why my favorite scenes from the film are the intimate moments of character and humanity.

The final scene where all the guardians hold the stone gave me goosebumps as it thematically talks about learning to share pain. They come together to finally become the "Guardians of the Galaxy."

I love this movie. Why?
Because the people who worked on it gave a shit.
For once.
